The Veggie Shed CSA Program

What is a CSA?

CSA is short for "Community Supported Agriculture." A customer will pre-purchase a "share" in the farm for the season, and in return receive a box for a set number of weeks through the growing season filled with seasonal vegetables, and in some cases fruit and other items. The money a farmer receives prior to the growing season helps him with the high pre-season costs of seeds and start-up expenses each year. To read more about CSA's, please visit our Articles page, or visit: http://www.localharvest.org/csa/

What makes our CSA unique?

Quite a few things actually! For starters, although we are not a certified organic farm (we will be pursuing a Naturally Grown certification instead), we do maintain organic growing practices. We do not use any chemical insecticides or fertilizers. If we have do a problem that would require some support, we will make our own sprays using natural ingredients, or may purchase an organic spray. We use natural fertilizers — compost, worm castings, etc. We do not use GMO or treated seeds, but instead primarily use heirloom, organic seeds. Please read more on this subject on our Articles page.

We are a small family farm. You will definitely get to know your farmer and not feel like "just a number" here. Another unique quality of our CSA is the wide variety we offer by supplementing our own produce with produce grown from local Amish farmers. They grow the old fashioned way — with horse & plow, with their hands instead of modern machinery, and with the knowledge and skill they have developed with generations of family farming.

Also, we include fruit as part of the CSA program (with no additional expense). Last year for example, we included cherries, watermelons, muskmelons, blueberries, strawberries, and honeydew in our boxes! We also like to include some extra decorative items as well (flowers, gourds, etc.) and herbs (parsley & basil). We hope to increase these in variety & quantity the coming year.

We try to include a weekly newsletter that has farm & family events, new recipes, and produce tidbits about the fresh produce in your box.

What's Included?

We will provide a generous assortment of vegetables and fruits (varying depending on the time of year) in your boxes each week.
